Partial Dentures Sydney
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are designed to replace one or more missing teeth while complementing the natural teeth you still have. At Urim Denture Clinic, dental prosthetist Isaac Hoshi carefully considers your mouth, bite and smile to create a denture that feels secure, functions comfortably and looks natural.

What are partial dentures?
A partial denture is a removable appliance that replaces some missing teeth. Unlike a complete denture, it is made to fit around natural teeth that remain in the upper or lower jaw.
The replacement teeth are held within a base or framework designed for your mouth. Depending on the design, the denture may use clasps or other components to help hold it in position. The condition and location of your remaining teeth, your gums, your bite and the spaces being restored all influence how the denture should be planned.
A consultation allows Isaac to examine your mouth, understand what you would like to improve and discuss whether a partial denture may be appropriate.
When may a partial denture be considered?
A partial denture may be considered when one or more teeth are missing but suitable natural teeth remain. It can replace a single space or several missing teeth in different areas of the same jaw.
We can assess partial dentures if:
- You are missing one or more teeth and want to understand your replacement options.
- Gaps are affecting how you eat, speak or feel about your smile.
- You already wear a partial denture that feels loose, uncomfortable or difficult to manage.
- Your current denture is worn, damaged or no longer suits your mouth.
- You have been advised that another tooth may need to be removed.
- You would like to compare an acrylic partial denture with a cobalt chrome design.
Your remaining teeth and gums need to be assessed before a partial denture is planned. If dental treatment is required first, Isaac will explain this and coordinate with your dentist where appropriate.
Types of partial dentures.
The right partial denture is not chosen by material alone. The number and position of the missing teeth, the support available from the remaining teeth and gums, the bite and the likelihood of future changes all need to be considered.

Acrylic Partial Dentures
An acrylic partial denture uses a gum-coloured acrylic base that supports the replacement teeth. Clasps may be used to assist with retention. Acrylic designs can be suitable in a range of situations, including when the mouth may change and future additions or modifications may need to be considered.

Cobalt Chrome Partial Dentures
A cobalt chrome partial denture has a cast metal framework designed to fit around and gain support from selected natural teeth. The framework can often be made thinner and more rigid than an acrylic base, but it is not suitable for every mouth. Careful assessment of the remaining teeth, gums and bite is required.

Choosing the Appropriate Design
We will explain the relevant options after examining your mouth. The recommendation will consider your clinical needs, comfort, appearance, maintenance requirements and treatment priorities rather than relying on one standard design.
Partial dentures planned around your natural teeth.
A full denture needs to work in everyday situations, not only while you are sitting in the clinic. Urim considers how the denture feels, functions and looks as part of the same treatment process.
How we plan and fit your partial denture.
Partial denture treatment usually involves several clinical and technical stages. The exact sequence depends on your mouth, the selected design and whether your remaining teeth require care from a dentist before treatment begins.
Step 1
Consultation and oral assessment
Isaac discusses your concerns, health history, previous denture experience and what you would like to improve. He examines the missing spaces, remaining teeth, gums and bite.
Step 2
Treatment planning
The available partial denture options are considered in relation to your clinical needs. If another dental practitioner needs to assess or treat your remaining teeth, this is discussed before the denture is made.
Step 3
Records and design
Records and measurements are taken to plan how the denture will fit around the remaining teeth and replace the missing spaces. The framework or base, tooth position and bite are considered together.
Step 4
Trial and fitting
Where the design allows, the proposed tooth position and appearance are reviewed before completion. At fitting, Isaac checks the denture in your mouth and explains how to insert, remove and care for it.
Step 5
Review and adjustment
New partial dentures can feel unfamiliar. Follow-up appointments allow the fit, bite and any sore areas to be assessed and adjusted where clinically appropriate.
Getting used to a new partial denture.
It can take time to become accustomed to a new denture. You may initially notice changes in speech, chewing or the amount of space the denture occupies in your mouth.
Follow the wearing and eating advice provided at your fitting. Do not bend clasps or adjust the denture yourself. If it causes persistent soreness, feels unstable or becomes difficult to insert or remove, contact Urim for an assessment.
Your natural teeth and gums still require regular dental care. A partial denture should be reviewed over time because changes to the mouth or remaining teeth can affect its fit and function.
Caring for partial dentures and remaining teeth.
Cleaning the denture and the natural teeth that support it is an important part of ongoing care.
- Remove the denture before cleaning it.
- Brush all denture surfaces with a denture brush or soft toothbrush and mild soap, unless advised otherwise.
- Avoid ordinary toothpaste on acrylic surfaces because it may scratch them.
- Clean over a folded towel or basin of water to reduce the risk of damage if the denture is dropped.
- Carefully clean your natural teeth, gums and the areas around any clasps.
- Remove the denture at night unless your dental practitioner advises otherwise.
- Attend regular reviews with your dentist and dental prosthetist.
- If your partial denture breaks, a tooth comes away or a clasp is damaged, keep every piece and contact Urim. Do not use household glue or try to reshape it yourself. Visit our Denture Repairs page for more information.

Frequently asked questions about partial dentures.
Still have a question?
A partial denture replaces some missing teeth and fits around natural teeth that remain. A complete denture replaces all natural teeth in the upper jaw, lower jaw or both.
Neither material is automatically the right choice for everyone. The condition and position of your remaining teeth, the number of missing teeth, the bite, future treatment needs and your priorities all influence the design. Isaac will explain the advantages and limitations that apply to your mouth.
A partial denture is designed to work with selected natural teeth and oral tissues. Good design, daily cleaning and regular reviews are important. Your dentist should continue to monitor the health of your remaining teeth and gums.
Partial dentures usually require several appointments. Timing depends on the design and whether your remaining teeth need treatment first. Urim will explain the anticipated stages after your assessment.
Some partial dentures can be repaired or modified, but this depends on the material, design, condition and reason for the change. The denture and your mouth need to be assessed before an appropriate recommendation can be made.
The fee depends on the design, material, number of teeth being replaced and the clinical and technical work involved. Urim will provide a recommendation and quote after your consultation and assessment.
You can contact Urim directly for a partial denture consultation. If your natural teeth require examination or treatment by a dentist, Isaac will explain this and can communicate with your treating practitioner where appropriate.
